How do iPhone App Developers Make Money selling FREE apps?

I don’t get how some application developers make their Money From selling on the app store. For example, on the ebay application, there are no advertisements i can see at all in the app, yet it was a free app?

As far as ebay is concerned, they make money every time a sale is made so it behooves them to offer a free product that allows more sales to be made. Notice their website at ebay.com does not charge you a membership either.
